Education
« on: October 29, 2013, 04:26:20 pm »
I'm looking for some general information regarding education.  How are high school diplomas from the Dominican Republic viewed here?

Would having a GED be better?

Do universities and trade school typically accept the out of country high school diplomas for acceptance into their programs?

Thanks in advance for any information.

How are they viewed in the states you mean? I'd say getting a GED would be a good idea, but I don't know. I'm definitely interested to know the answers to this too!!

On the contrary, Dominican high school diplomas are fine, no need to get a GED here. Just make sure you bring those records home with you.

On the other hand, there are very few Universities in the DR that will transfer to the USA. Most colleges here won't accept credits from the DR unless they are from certain Universities and you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get them accepted here also.

Yes the Dominican high school diploma is viewed just like having an American high school diploma.  But Tim is 100% correct the college diploma is another thing.  It's a hassle if you can find another university to acknowledge the credits.

If your looking to get into college you have to bring your high school transcripts or you wont get admitted at least here where I live.  Went thru this with my wife at both the local community college and a major universities in the area. She had a copy of the high school diploma, her college transcripts and college diploma in hand but was not admitted anywhere until she got her high school transcripts in hand.

Really great info, thanks.

In summary, high school diplomas from Dominican Republic are recognized in the States but for purposes of additional education the transcripts are needed. Don't forget to bring that document!

Just be aware, transcripts are not always needed. My ex went to the local Community college here and didn't need her transcript. That doesn't mean that there aren't some places that will want a transcript, it just varies with the college or university. The best thing to do would be to get it whether you need it or not and then you'll have it just in case.

Foreign High School Diplomas are fine in the states. The only problem is transferring credits from a foreign college to a college in the USA. That is hard.
I wouldn't make someone take a GED here if they already have a high School diploma from their country.A GED is hard to do.I know someone who did it.
Good Luck.

It was fine, no complaints really! For the price I paid, I don't think that there is a better value. On the weekend it got really crowded so next time I think we will stay somewhere not so close to the city.

The GED is SO SO easy, I took it myself because I was homeschooled. If it's not necessary, it's not necessary though!
