Intensive English classes here and then trade school once arriving to the US. That's my opinion! Any trade school here most likely will not transfer to the US, it will be a waste of time and money. Many things are done VERY differently here than there. For example- I went to trade school for cosmetology in the US for 1 1/2 years until I decided it wasn't for me. I then visited salons here and witnessed their hygienic practices, especially when doing nails, are WAY off and could potentially lead to the spread of HIV. They may have been "trained" on how to do it, but it is NOT up to US standards. The same would be for electricity, construction, etc. There are different codes here than in the US.

02/23/2014-POE at Newark, NJ.
03/07/2014-Received SSN in the mail
04/11/2014-Received green card
07/31/2017- Applying for divorce

I agree with Kayleighrose, English is your best bet. Most schools in the DR don't transfer here so it's usually a waste of time and money. English will at least give them a good start in the USA.

I agree with all the above.. My ex husband lucked out temporarily.. He had his degree in Computer Systems (Associates Degree) when he came to the states, and for 3 years was able to use it.. Many systems for Y2K was programmed in assembly language, and there wasn't enough people around that were fluent in it.. He was.. So he had no english, but the company PAID for an interpreter so that he could program!! haha.. TOO FUNNY.. he made excellent money.. the most money he has ever made in the states.. unfortunately when Y2K hit, the job fazed out..

Now he's a mechanic..

English is the best thing he could do.. Tell him he will be lost, but to give it 6 months before he gives up.. (Many like to give up within ght first 2-3 months) don't let him!! :) It will be the best thing ever for him!!
