The past 5 years......
« on: February 06, 2014, 09:28:00 am »
First off I would like to say how happy I am that this inhumane process now only takes 6 - 8 months. It took us over 2 1/2 years and there was no reviews or anything. Just a lot of time.

We live in an area where there really are few latinos so that was difficult for my wife at first. The only person she talked much to was our children! She jumped into learning English and has done very well. She actually gets a bit upset when she hears families in a store speaking only Spanish. She was asked a question in Spanish one time and just shrugged her shoulders and said she did not understand. She firmly believes that English is the American language. However she still wants our children (7 and 12) to know Spanish. Our 12 year old is taking Spanish in school and says it is different than what she learned in the D.R. (she got to the U.S. when she was 7. Brianna (my natural child with my Dominicana) learned English right away and almost (until recently) refused to speak any Spanish. After all, Sponge Bob doesn't speak Spanish.

We live in one of the worst snow belt areas in the country: just south of Buffalo NY. I remember once Yahaira was asked how she like all the snow. She responded that it was just fine. She didn't go out! When Brianna ist touched snow at 1 1/2 years old she thought she burnt herself!

My wife never had a drivers license in the D.R. and she never drove a car. For the first couple of years she simply did not want to drive. We got a new car and at that point she thought maybe she wanted to learn. She got professional driving instructions and after just a couple of months passed her road test on the first try. Now she drives almost dailey, except when we have a lot of snow.

It's hard to believe that it has been over 5 years! Things run pretty smooth most of the time and we are a happy American family. Yahaira has her citizenship interview on March 4th and I know she will do well.

People that are in the process of getting their significat other here need to know that the hard work comes when they get here to the U.S. This is when you will both need to change because it is different. You will have struggles but work on it. Accept and cherish your differences.
Can't we all just get along?

Wishing you and your family best of luck in all future endeavors.  I was going to teach my wife how to drive myself, but decided to get her a driving school, I know she won't argue with the instructor  the other night she asked me what does yield  means, coming from New Yersey, New York area I  told her who gets there first, then she went to google translator  and found out, looked at me and said " Mira Cono'  :rotfl: :rotfl:

Best of luck freind
