Hi everyone! I am new to this board and looking for some of your collective insight. I have been living in the DR for just over 2 years, and dating my Dominican boyfriend for nearly as long. We are currently in the process of deciding on our next steps, and debating the merits of fiance vs. marriage visas.

From other threads on this page, its seems the general consensus is that marriage visas are the way to go, since they are less expensive, involve less hassle post-approval, and are more likely to be approved. Is this still the case?

My main hesitation is that I was reviewing visa processing times on another website, which said that the current processing time for fiance visas is 219 days, compared to 415 for a CR1/IR1. Are these numbers consistent with people's experiences?

Are there any other factors we should be thinking about?

Saludos, and thank you for your help!

Welcome!

First, Hopefully you have residence in D.R. ??????

Second, the time frames you're looking at are incorrect for K visas. It takes about the same amount of time to file and receive a K visa as it does and CR visa. ALSO, those time frames are for filing a petition through the USCIS here in the States. CR/IR visas ARE easier and cheaper in just about every way.

As long as you have residency, even temporary residency in D.R. You can file a Spousal Visa directly at the Embassy. The processing time to do that lately is about 3-4 months. However, K-1 visas (Fiance) are not available for processing directly at the Embassy at all unless even more changes have recently been made there.

Any questions you have, feel free to ask away. We are all here to help out, pretty much everyone on this forum has either been through the process, or currently in process.

Thank you for the info! Sadly I don't think DCF is on the table for us--if I remember correctly you need to have been married for a certain amount of time before you can file (?), and I'll be leaving the DR in May :(

Do you have any idea what a more realistic timeline is for spousal and fiance visas?

No, it's mainly by the amount of time you've been residing in D.R. that they look for. Trust me, you've been there long enough for that, as long as you have even temporary residency.

To file from inside the States, you're looking at a year for either type of visa you wish to file.
