Exit Permit for Minors
« on: May 15, 2017, 07:36:28 am »
Hello,

Does anyone have any expereince with the Exit Permit for Minors process that came into effect August 1, 2017.  I brought my child (US Citizen) from the DR to the US in mid August last year and I had no issues and I did not have an exit permit, however, I do not know if they are more strict.  My son will travel to the DR by himself in June and his father (US citizen but resides in the DR) will bring him back to the US in August.  My understanding is the parent that is not traveling with the child must get an Minor Exit Permit.  So this will require me to go to a Dominican Consulate in the US within 30 days of him traveling back, get the permit, and send to the DR.  My understanding is this would be the same if I were to go and get him, and bring him back to the US (his father would have to go to immigration and get an exit permit).

https://www.migracion.gob.do/Menu/Index/30

I just wanted to check in and see if anyone on this site has had any issues with this or dealt with it yet, like I said, I came back in August with him last year and was unaware of this and no one even asked, but I am a bit nervous and do not want any issues.  Any input would be appreciated.

Gracias.

Is your child a dual citizen, i.e. has citizenship in both the DR and the U.S.?

I will have to investigate this but it should be a non issue for USC child.

My child does not have dual citizenship, there seems to be restrictions on both Dominican Citizen Minors and Foreigners Minors.  As the details describe, it is required that there is an exit permit when traveling with only one parent from the Dominican Republic.  I have called the Dominican Consulate in the US and they say the same thing, I was just hoping to hear from someone that has had a US citizen child travel with only one parent from the DR to the US in the past few months.

If you have a minor child with U.S. citizenship traveling with a U.S. passport leaving the DR and entering the U.S. you should not have any issues. If that child was leaving the U.S. with only one parent then you would need permission from the other parent for the child to leave the U.S. or a court order showing that the parent had sole legal custody of the child.

If that child was traveling with a non-parent that person would need permission from both parents or a court order showing that they had legal guardianship.

In punta cana back in January when we left, they told us we would need that exit permit if they were to travel with one parent. My last name is Martinez and my step daughters is also martinez so immigration always assumes I'm their biological mother. I would go to immigration and get the form to be on the safe side.

Marc, you get it backwards. Leaving the D.R. is the issue, not leaving the U.S.

SO, we are sending our son to D.R. for a month. He is a U.S. citizen, born in D.R. He will be traveling alone. So, we spoke with migracion in D.R. and we are told that he will not have any issues getting back with the permisso being that he will enter with his U.S. passport and leave in less than a month, also with his U.S. passport.

Also, my wife went 2 years ago to D.R. with my daughter. She had no issues leaving or returning with my USC daughter.

Yeah, when we had my friend's son for the summer in the Dominican Republic.. He had to have an exit permit.  He was a United States Citizen..

My son as a Dominican Citizen also needed the exit permit.. (Not called that?! )

Very important and can't get home without it.. Can be done in the USA.. My bestfriend had hers done at the Dominican Embassy before she sent her son.. then he was able to go back home.

Just got back from vacation to the D.R. on July 4th. Traveled with my 16 year old stepdaughter out of Toronto. She was born in the D.R. but is now a U.S. Citizen, We had no problem at any time.

When I travel alone with my stepdaughter I always have a notarized letter signed by my wife that states I am authorized to travel with her. We were never even asked for the letter.
Can't we all just get along?

A note here. Our son went back to D.R. last month to visit his grandparents for a few weeks. He is Dominican born, but has a U.S. Passport.  He's 13, traveled unaccompanied and had no issues leaving D.R. no permisso needed.
