      Hi I'm El Caballero. American citizen living on the East Coast and a frequent traveler to DR since 2010. I'm a native Spanish speaker and often times I get mistaken for Dominican, but I was originally born in Latin America, then migrated to the U.S. I found this blog on YouTube posted by someone who was commenting about a particular video having to do with D,R.  I must say that I find all the stories fascinating! And stayed up til 5am reading as much as I could in the relationship section and divorce, which brings me to my story.

I have been learning about Dominican culture for the past 7 years and have been dating someone from there about 5 years. I'm middle age and there is approximately a 15-20 year difference between myself and my SO. I have spent and average of 2-3 months each year during the 5 years we have been seen each other down there while visiting, and the last 2 sharing an apartment when I'm there.  My original plan was to work online and spend most of my year there in order to see if the relationship is worth taking to the next level or not.  Initially there was no interest on her part to come to the U.S. but most recently it seems that her gears have shifted towards children and marriage, plus moving here.
I have been married before & brought someone here with a child from South America a while back, which ended in divorce after 5 years. I  must admit that I'm no rush to get married again or go through all the paperwork required to bring someone from abroad, after my last experience.  That person arrived and simply could not help comparing U,S. To her native country, albeit the crappy conditions and lack of opportunity that exist there.  That original discontent put a strain on the marriage which eventually led to emotional withdrawal then divorce.
My hesitation is the following.  I would love to bring my girl here, but there are so many cultural differences that I do not know if we can overcome them? I often feel like I'm second to her family and their needs.  I often think that she has so many family issues that she really is not able to put a 100% into the relationship. She says that Americans are not family oriented and that we are egocentric.....I simply tell her that in America we sort of have that pull yourself up by your own bootstraps attitude and only look for help when needed.  I know that poverty and lack of opportunity there makes it hard for many to succeed, but I have still come across many Dominicans who have persevered and defied the odds.  If I marry this woman, I feel that the family finance/loyalty issue is going to be a point of tension between us.  I'm not wealthy and If I marry this person, I would definitely need her help if we plan to live as a couple in America.  If she is going to want to send most of her earnings back home and instead have me bear the entire finances for both of us, then there will be issues.  She has already told me that Dominican men pay for everything down there, which I find very hard to believe from conversations I have had with some.  She works and she does pay a small portion of the apartment expenses in D.R. but was not too happy about it.
Realistically speaking, how much of a problem is it going to be for me having to marry someone who's family will be so dependent on her for financial support, but at the same time expect her to put our future family first? Here in America, parents usually try to plan in advance as to not become a financial burden to their kids, but over there it seems the 401k plan is to have your kids make it out of the hood and take care of you later on.  I have no issues with her helping her family in emergencies or if truly needed, but I'm afraid that I will supporting her and a few other people along the way for our entire life.  She very rarely tells me about family issues since I told her once that if you give a man a fish, he will only eat for a day, but if you teach him to fish, he will always have a way to eat....That leads me to believe that if she is going to help them, it will probably be a well kept secret, which does not contribute to a healthy marriage.  At this point in the relationship, I do not know if it is about love or simply coming here to resolve her family issues.  I just do not feel the connection we originally had, and I do not feel the effort she used to put into the relationship when we first met.  I still make a daily effort to see how she is doing, I encourage video chats, and still travel there every 3 months, but I still think her family issues consume so much of her mental energy, that she is just simply going through the motions.  She says that when we are in the same place, things would be better, but in my opinion.....If we are arguing as it is long distance over cultural differences, then how can we make it while together?
I look forward to the words of wisdom, and I will keep an open mind as well. Thank You......By the way I found that post on Dominicans and Thank You, quite entertaining.  I have found that some say it and some don't Here in America when you do not say thank you upon receiving something, it is takes as a sign that your gesture was not appreciated or the gift was not to your liking, but In their case it might a matter of the word thank you not taught as a child or simply something where if they revived the gesture, then it is a given that it was appreciated and no need to say it out loud. I must admit this does annoy me at times since it feels almost as some form of entitlement or I did not ask you to do that......so why thank you? Some say it, some don't.

Good afternoon to all, yes alive and well, my dear friend El Caballero, you have asked lots of question all at one time, yes big culture difference from central America to DR, I am in Miami, Florida where I see both all the time. Is she going to help her family could be my wife wanted to when she came over and  realize, USA is not what most people think it is, and she stop. My wife and I have being together now for quite some time and its all good am 30 years older and never had a problem with that. You cant predict the future bro so my advise is go for the gold enjoy life and fuck the rest that simple, the process is not easy, but you are a big boy you can handle it. by the way in case it does not  work out, get one of those girls from Russia  :rotfl:

Good Luck ma man.

Q-ban! long time no see!! glad you are alive and well!

Hola Caballero. . . .my advice to you is RUN. . RUN FAST! dominicans will always feel like they need to take care of their family with $$$$$. i have been married to my husband for 4 years and since he landed here in North Dakota.. like 5 months later he was sending money back to his parents. If you are not open with each other about things like that, i doubt a relationship will work in the long run. . . my husband makes sure our bills are paid before sending money to his parents/cousin/nephew. Before we were married I used to always take his family members little things like perfumes and clothes because it came out of my heart. i've always said it's better to give than to receive. Her not telling you about family issues will probably bring problems in the future as well. . . . because if she's not telling you..shes going to tell someone else. My hubby and I have our many differences but in the end we come together and agree on the best option. . .I was born in Mexico and my parents are mexican. . so growing up in a mexican household, It made me understand dominican culture better. . . but many dominicans think that money grows on tree's here in the USA as well so some do go overboard asking for things. . . but in my honest opinion. If you LOVE her, you have to understand her. But if you do not feel the connection you originally had. . that is not a good sign. . .run fast my friend. . .

Thanks for the reception and advice to both Qban and Clarywaldo. I know I said quite a mouthful on my initial introduction, which I went over to the relationship section and narrowed my question quite a bit.  I'm new to the site and I look forward to reading and learning. I'm an open minded person & this would be my 2nd time at the dance.....I simply do not want to crash and burn again, but hopefully this person will give me the required indicators to go ahead and take the plunge.

This line made me chuckle....It is best to teach the folks to fish as opposed to just give them a fish, but I have found that many do think money grows on trees.....They have no idea of what is required to make it here.  I'm a very low profile guy while I'm there and have modest apartment in a middle class neighborhood which I rent.  I'm seriously considering trying to get an online job and perhaps spending more time there than here....Will think about it.

See my post on your other thread in response to your question. BTW please don't double post, someone will see you post and answer you.

What orange thing on you post are you talking about?

Doesn't sound like this chick is really into you. You got a whole island full of beauties there. Pick another one fast.

You are alive?

Greeting twincactus.  Thanks for responding.  The orange banner I was referring to was the one that appears as "new" I guess that shows up when you have not read a particular post, I thought it was something I could attach to my post, but I guess it is automatic.  I apologize for reposting, I wanted to quote something that Cuban wrote earlier, but I could not figure out how to do it and paste it.

As far as if this girl is in to me. We have been together for 6 years and originally my plan was to move there and work online, which she was fine with, but upon renting the apartment a few disagreements surfaced, both personally and externally.  I don't mind visiting a few months of the year, but living there 24/7 would drive me nuts! There is lots of good, but the bad is bad! I originally encouraged her to get a vacation visa a few years back, but she was not too interested in doing that, but I guess at this point since I don't plan to live there, she wants to know what is next, therefore if I won't be there, she would want to be here.  I can't blame her for wanting to advance her life, but I simply do not wish to be married at this time, without having lived with someone for a while. I have been there done that in my last marriage and not looking to make that mistake again. That is pretty much the gist of things. Please see attachment for the orange banner I was referring to. Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!

Yes, the orange banners are new posts since the last time you visited.

As for the girl, you have to figure out whether you really care about her or not and better yet if the same is true for her. Living with someone is always a gamble but sometimes you just know.
