I am an American, 29-year-old female who came to the Dominican republic and fell in love with a man in San Francisco de Macoris. I have been here for four months and I just found out that I’m pregnant and we intend to get engaged in the next few months and we are trying to decide if we should go back to the United States and I need advice as to how to approach that. I am currently living in San Francisco de Macoris. I don’t know who I should go to talk to or what paperwork I should file from here or if we should get married here or what we should do as we have limited funds
The real questions are........ Where do you really want to be? Where does HE want to be? Are you residing there legally? How far along are you in the pregnancy? How well do you REALLY know one another? And of course, the big one; Are you both really ready for the next step in the relationship?
If your goal is getting married and coming back to the States, the first real hurdle is that you (and/or someone on your behalf) must be able to show ability to support the intending immigrant if it becomes necessary. In other words, the immigrant CAN NOT become charge of the State. This can sometimes be a problem for folks in your position (limited funds). If you are there residing legally, there are steps you can take to file a petition directly at the Embassy......... but only for family members (spouse included).
Bottom line, you have to know exactly what it is you want to do and WHEN before we can tell you the steps to take. You have options and different time frames as to how to go about all of it, you just have to narrow down what exactly it is you want to do and when.
Example: If your goal is to get back to the States with your SO BEFORE your child is born, you really only have ONE option which is DCF (Direct Consular Filing) and there are hurdles to clear if that is the case. And here they are. 1. Are you residing legally there? 2. How far along are you in the pregnancy? 3. You MUST be married to apply this way.
The more info we have, the better we are able to help you.
