Visa Delivery by DOMEX
« on: March 18, 2008, 03:00:30 pm »
Hi Folks

I just got an email from Mr. Bent advising everyone, DO NOT BUY YOUR TICKETS BEFORE YOU HAVE YOUR VISA IN YOUR HAND, I dont think I can say it any plainer than that.
I know all of us have waited a very long time to get through this, but once your visa is approved you must understand that there is a tremendous amount of processing that the Embassy must go through before its sent to you.

They have security checks that they need to complete, they must assemble the package that you take to the POE and most importantly the have to print your visa correctly, this alone has several checks before its done.

So I know everybody wants to get on that airplane and head home, I know I know, but give Mr. Bent a break, they are working their fingers to the bone.

P.S. The embassy is calling March, "The Love Month"
Congratulations to all of you that will be starting a new life together

It would be my pleasure, everyone that comes down here for their interview is purchasing their return tickets ahead of time, (USC and SO)this should not be done. If you must purchase a return ticket, make it the open type where you can change the date without having additional fees added on. This may cost a few extra dollars, but the Embassy can not guarantee when the visa will actually be in your hand, we have seen anywhere between 4 days to 2 weeks.

The real problem here is that we can not ask Mr. Bent to check on every visa issued and when its been given to Domex, everyone on this board needs to plan for at least 2 weeks after the interview before they purchase any kind of ticket, and please please be patient, they are working as fast as possible.

Note that certain airlines like Continental only charge a nominal fee to change a ticket (I believe $30) while others like AA charge a fortune ($100).

Delta charges $25 plus the difference in the ticket price if any applies.

But I don't know what I would do, if it cost more money to buy the ticket in such a short time or the cost of changing the tickets.

Hi Folks

I know this can be a problem, since Dominican immigrations requires Americans to have a return ticket.
It seems there are several options here.

1. Fly Continental for the return portion of your trip
2. Purchase your SO's ticket only after visa is in hand
3. Purchase your return ticket with a "Open return"
4. Just fork out the extra fee to change the date

The USC really should be the only one that needs to purchase the "open return" which seems to be the most logical choice, the Dominican Citizen only needs a one way ticket anyway, so that one can be purchased on-line when the visa is in hand.

We face (2) problems here folks.
1. The Embassy needs the time to finish processing the visa
2. Domex... (They are a problem) do I need to say more??

So give yourself at least 2 weeks for for the return trip, your SO will need some time anyway to say Good-bye to all their friends and finalize all their business here in the DR

Honestly...... If you have waited as long as some for there SO to be in the states with them, what's another 2-4 weeks maximum if you plan to be with this person for the rest of your life?

You know I am one of those who would not want to buy the ticket while I was there for several reasons. One of the reasons I did it ahead of time is so that my wife and I could sit together on the plane. I booked her ticket and mone at the same time for that reason. The other thing is what if the planes are full or near full? You could pay easily $1,200 or more EACH for a ticket.

Look I know they say that. You know why? Because they don't want to hear from whiney hineys that can't make their plane because they didn't give themselves enough time. I don't blame the consulate for that. So book your ticket if you want to but DON'T whine to the Consulate to give you special treatment if the visa takes longer than anticipated. Right now I would say give yourself two weeks after the appt and if you get it sooner, then change the tickets and fly together. I am a big advocate of that.

Tim I agree with you. I got my tickets already for two reasons. 1. I am gambling that we get it within a week. and wanted to make sure we had seats and together And 2. I got a deal on the flights.

Now I know if its later I will have to change and pay the difference and so be it. I will not complain 1 bit becuase we have been warned..  :P

I just hope the quick processing continues because I can only stay a max of 12 days.  If we don't have the visa in hand, I have to fly home to teach class and fly back to get babey.

This is correct .. a USC is "supposed" to have a round trip ticket however that there are ways around this as the tickets do not have to be on the same airline .. just hold a ticket on AA
