Based on some threads from few members' experience with AOS, I want to know what the K1 veterans suggest to do before the interview/AOS.

What should we know before filing for the AOS that can be done in the DR before the interview? Someone mentioned getting the vaccines? I have read all the AOS process but since I am not there quite yet, I am not sure how I can better prepare for it now.

Here is something I want to know, what determines whether you need a co-sponsor or not? How much should your salary be at minimum to not have a co-sponsor?

Ummmm there has been a link to the poverty line tables on this site since the server crash. It's on the right hand side on the nav bar, but just in case you can't find it, here is the link. No calculations necessary:

You should also add your spouse to some or all of your bills and accounts as you will need this to prove an ongooing relationship for AOS and lifting conditions.

My advice is to keep EVERYTHING and MAKE COPIES. Also follow directions to the T. Here's a link to the AOS page and you can download the instructions to get a head start.

Adding your future spouse to your lease and electric, water, etc. bills should be the first step...you do not need to be married to do this...

Adding him/her to your bank account depends on the bank...some will ask for your marriage cert. This will be the same for your insurance at work...most companies do not let you add him/her without the marriage cert.

You DEF. need to get the vaccinations in DR...but other than that, there's nothing else you can do there...the rest needs to be done once he/she is here...

10 days after arriving, go to the SS office...it's useless to go before then, the SS won't have info on your spouse and won't issue the card...

THEN get married...also apply for the DL...This is only good for as long as the K-1 visa is valid...90 days...THEY WILL NOT issue the DL if the visa only has a month or less of validity...

They will need to reapply AFTER getting the NOA for the AOS......it's a pain in the ass...but it's the only way they will issue the DL...OR...as Tony did...he took the tests...which he passed with flying colors...but had to wait for the NOA and THEN went to get the DL...which arrived in the mail AFTER he had already gotten the GC...Go figure...

The good thing is that if he has a Dominican DL they can drive here with no problems...

File for AOS as soon as you're married...We didn't file for EAD or Advance Travel papers...To me it's a waste of money...DON'T plan on going out of the country for the first year...and by that time, he/she will have their GC...

I know Tim will disagree with me here, but I'm just telling you what we did...

Send in ALL the papers they request, and MORE if you can...PLUS keep copies of EVERYTHING...

We paid for our marriage cert. and got 4 extra certified copies at the same time, and they only cost like and extra $12 or so...

Good luck y'all...

Ok...I have a few questions...since this will be the K1 tip thread...

where do you get the I-94 from? Is that the form on the plane that they give you to fill out?...Do you present that form to the INs officer when you get off the plane? And aside from the seal package..what else do you present to the INS office upon arrival to the airport?

Now, I live in my parents house, I pay most of the bill and they are under my name but..not the house...I plan to move at least 4 months after getting married...So, right now I dont have a way to attach my SO to a lease...or bills?...will adding him to my bank account do? how about to my car insurance?..or can you guys recommend something else?

Thanks ya'll

Yes they give it out on the plane. You can add him to your bank accout or health/life insurance.

Even though its your parents house if you pay rent then you are a tenant and they should be able to write up a lease under your name and your SO...

Thank you MQ! That's what I'm talking about  dude

Couple of follow up ?'s:

My sis and I live together; we rent my tia's house so nothing is under our name not even a formal lease paper. She is in charge of H2O and garbage and I have the PG&E bill. Is it bad that I will have 1 home bill under me and Henry for AOS purposes? There will be our joint bank acct as well.

What are tips on adding your SO to your credit cards? Does his credit start from when he is added to it?

A Dominican DL is really valid in the US or does it vary by state? MQ, so he had to reapply for the DL after the 90 days?  Undecided

Vane you can add him as a authorized user on your CC. It's a good way to start and built up his credit. I did it while my SO was in DR incase they asked for other evidence for cita.

In a credit report, hypothetically speaking, that CC will show up even if he is only an authorized use huh?

No, this won't build his individual credit. Don't worry though, my wife got a line of $4000 recently and was offered a $10,000 personal loan. She built all the credit herself. When he is ready I can give you the name of some CC companies that will take the chance on new credit.

Oh, tubaby..don't pay any attention to Mr. Know-it-all...

It DOES build his credit...I have Tony on my cc's...and he's getting offers all the time now for new cc's...

As a matter of fact, that's what happened at the bank...remember the other thread I posted?

Anyway, if your aunt could draw up a lease agreement, you could put both your names on it...it's just a formality...to show for AOS...

Don't worry too much about it...

No it DOES NOT build HIS credit at all. If you want me to find the documentation I will. People don't understand this at all. YOU are the card holder. It does NOT report to the 3 major credit agencies in his name at all. You are quite wrong.

If you're right...with documentation, I will bring this up with them for trying to dupe me...
