The article is self explanatory.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/28/AR2007102801706.html

Let's see if we can get some more press on this. Please mention the wait time in the DR and also don't forget to mention the website.  Wink

I have friends that actually know this writer and I sent her an email - but I have not heard a response from her.  I will let everyone know once I do.

DC is a very transient international area with all the embassies and NGO's here. So lots of international love going on.

Being that this is an election year - writers are all over the candidate stories at the moment - but it would not hurt to have an inundation of emails to her:
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/staff/email/karin+brulliard/

Also - you might be more effective writing someone at The NY Times and Post or even the New Yorker!  More Dominicans are in NY than anywhere else in the country - and people in DC read these papers/magazine.  If anyone knows a writer or photographer in them - let us know - I will ask my brother as he is a member of several professional photographer associations.

No problem...

I am going to get in touch with my photographer friend that used to work at The Post.  She might be able to get me a direct phone number to her.  Then all of us can call and inundate her!

I am left in awe after raeding this article.  What struck me was this quote:

After writing to members of Congress and federal officials, she has learned only that the visa was denied on the following grounds: "The interviewing consular officer has reason to believe that the engagement was entered into to evade immigration laws."

How exactly can a CO get that impression?  How can an engagement be used to evade law?

OK,, in spite of this article, I had a dispute with my father the other day, He believes that as far as the government goes, that U.S Consulate is Autonomy federal agency, and that the CO’s decision to issue or deny a Visa is final no matter what, and they don’t necessarily have to give a reason to INS as to why.  I tell him that he is wrong, because if a visa is denied it can be appealed, and you can ask help from lawyers and legislators. Is he right.? I would like to prove him wrong.

The problem now is that CO's are looking for terrorists in addition to fraud marriages - so they just have to suspect...

I have a client that actually works at the embassy in Pakistan and I told her about my story and this is what she sent me today actually:

I wanted to follow up regarding below...did you get an update on the processing time for your (soon-to-be) husband?  I talked to a contact of mine (I'm in a different section of State, unfortunately, so I don't have direct insight into this process), explained to him your situation, and told him what you've done to date.  Unfortunately, as you mentioned, there is a history of abuse (not by Dominicans in particular...but across the board).  It's especially difficult for those who marry Americans and then try to move to the States/become US citizens.  This is an especially testing process now given attitudes towards immigration in general and hysteria concerning terrorism.  Every applicant is under extra scrutiny as a result which also stretches out the process.  The advice I was given to pass to you, you've already received (hiring of immigration attorneys on both sides of the border), etc. so you should rest assured you are definitely taking the right measures to push things forward.

I asked about what you might call "head of the line" privileges but unfortunately the levels of approval required do not make this an option.

Please keep me informed of your progress, though.  I can ping my contacts for advice if you run into any roadblocks along the way...

Keep in mind - I have met with a lawyer once and she told me that I would have my SO here in 9-12 months if we got married in Santo Domingo...which is a lie!  So - I have dumped the lawyer and not going back - they have no control over what happens in ANY government entity.

I am certain from what I have been hearing here on the board and talking with others - if you are real couple - it will show.  At least - that is the hope.

You're kidding right? How can it be used to evade the law? Well, if you are a terrorist and you want to get into the country legally, what better way to get here than file a K1 visa? So then you entered into the engagement to break the immigration laws. People do this all the time....for different reasons. Many Dominicans do it just to get out of the country.

Dammit Tim - I don't - that is what she asked as she works for the State Department, in an embassy.

She is actually a nice person and wants to help me.  I was just relaying what she wrote...I never asked  her to do anything for me - I asked her what she and her co-workers in the States Department and Homeland Security had heard about Dominicans in particular and how long the process is taking for everyone who applies for a K-1 and K-3 visa.  I have 2 other friends that are getting married to foreign nationals (different countries) and going through the same process.

I know you are straight shooter - but this is you either not reading the post or just being nasty for the sake of being nasty.  Since everyone says you are so smart - I can only deduct the latter.
