you cant go wrong with either. my best friend drives a 93 accord with 270,000 miles and still runs him 30 miles each way every day to work.

My first car was a Honda Acoord 1988 LX with a 5-speed. I bought it when I was in college with 191,000 miles on it and when I traded it in (actually just gave it to the dealer it wasnt worth anything) for my Maxima it had 254,000 miles on it and was STILL running!!

I have an 03 Acura MDX also bought it 2 years ago with like 41,000 miles now it has 77,000 miles....and just recently the check engine light came on. I took it to RR Straus (they are like Pep Boys)and they told me it was a transmission problem and that I would have to take it to a transmission shop or a dealer. So I took it to the dealer and they gave me a 2008 Acura TL for a loaner...THAT THING IS FAST!!!! But anyway...I had it for 2 days...they called and told me my truck was ready. The bill.........$3600 for a brand new transmission + the loaner car. THANK GOD I bought the extended warranty when I bought the car (only $1600 extra till the end of 2009). So I did not have to pay ONE penny.....just picked up my truck and bailed out....What service though.......because about a year ago I was at the Checkers and the girl was handing my my drink and it spilled all over the steering wheel....the buttons for the radio and cruise control are on the wheel...and since then the buttons all sticky and dont work half the time....ACURA fixed the buttons...they are brand new!!! Detailed and WASHED the car! WHAT SERVICE....just glad that happened and it was under warranty!!!!

Other than that I would still go with Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus!!! Nissan is not bad either I have a 97 Maxima when I bought it about 5 years ago it had 101,000 miles....now it has 225,000miles! Still runs just like before!! Still fast too!! Especially after I installed the y-pipe, high flow cat, and air intake!! Totally different monster...but not as fast as that Acura TL...DAYUM!! LOL.

You've got some good pointers here kuka. The only real thing I can add is, be careful with Carfax. While it IS a good tool to have and will most likely list major accidents, alot of small time body shops do not send reports to such agencies. However, if it turns out that it has been in a minor fender bender......no biggie. The other helpful use for carfax is mileage verification and number of previous owners the car has had. Everytime someone sends a report on a car to carfax, they have to send the mileage (so you know if someone has tried to tamper with teh odometer). SO, having a reputable mechanic check it over is the best idea (if buying a car and the owner insists you pay for the car before you can let anyone check it over.....walk away). Average mileage for a car in the U.S. is 11,000-15,000 miles per year. SO, if a car is a 2006 45,000 miles or so would be average.

Also as has been said already, while Hondas and Toyotas are just about the most reliable cars out there, price will reflect that........meaning they'll cost you a little more $$$$ but well worth it usually.

As far as Dealer or whole sale auctions... unless you know someone with a whole sale or dealer license, you can't just walk into one of those places and make a bid on a car...... They won't even let you past the gate without proof of a license. ALSO, you can find some good deals at whole sale auctions, but if you are not an experienced car buyer or technically inclined (or with someone who is)..... stay away.

I agree with D-mo, you can't let the CarFax make the decision for you. It's a useful tool, but you can't necessarily say just because a car has been in an accident, does not mean it's "bad". If it was properly repaired, it can be just fine or even better than it was before. The best thing you can do is bring along one of these guys from the web site or someone you know who is mechanically inclined with you when you go looking at the car. Don't go by yourself if you don't know what you are doing. My wife paid about $7K for her Camry, and it's a great car. It gets almost 30 miles to the gallon around town and more on the highway. Hybrids are gonna be out of your price range and there are more expensive parts that could fail.

Acura is also a good choice, but be aware that some of the newer Nissan engines (the past 10 years really) can give difficult driveability issues, mostly the 4 cylinder that is in the Altima and Sentra. 2004, 05, 06 and 07 Maximas are well known for engine wiring harness shorts and computer issues. Other than that....they are great cars too. Alot of headache with Nissan purchases can be avoided by taking the VIN number of a vehicle to the Dealer and ask them to search for open and completed recalls and warranty repair claims. AND honestly, this is a good thing to do with ALL car purchases.

something to know about hybrids... unless you drive like 200 miles a day, you'll never going to get the money you spent on it back. hybrid models are usually run about 6000-8000 dollars more than a normal model of the car. you save MAYBE 40 bucks a month in gas, so 480 a year. it'll take you like 9-10 YEARS before you actually end up saving any money since you paid so much for the damn car in the first place.

its a marketing gimmick.. GO GREEN!
