Hola a todos!
I have been reading posts at this site for a couple of months now, but was waiting to post my story. It feels great to know that there are others going through similar struggles, and it feels FANTASTIC to know that many have triumphed. So, here it goes:
I graduated from college last year, and was not ready to go right on to Graduate School and more self-torture just yet. I fished around for some jobs, but the economy wasn't promising even then

. Instead I came across several volunteer opportunities around Latin America (my degree has to do with LA studies) and decided to pursue one of them. I applied to Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos, an international orphanage that has 9 sites in Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The site in the Dominican Republic lies right outside of San Pedro de Macorís, and it is one of the newest. The volunteer coordinator sent me the approval within a month with two offers from Mexico and the DR. Since I am always up for a challenge, I decided that my future was going to be in the Caribbean!
I met Tony during my first week. He has worked at the orphanage for three years as the maintenance director and this past year started teaching the kids woodworking. His mature demeanor and his love for his job caught my eye right away, but I was in NO WAY looking for a Dominican love affair. He was quite shy around me, so I just went about my business. The problem was, there wasn't much to do! The site had many loose ends and no one knew quite where to put me yet. So, guess what---I found myself in the toolshed with Tony. The attraction was undeniable, and we skipped inevitably right from friendship to a nice little kiss. To make a long story short, we are still together after 15 months, but I am no longer at the orphanage. It got complicated and the administration had issues with us being together, so I left. I have been here teaching English ever since, and we are now happily engaged to be married!
I don't get sick of telling the story. It's my little piece of fairytale
