Hi All,

I have been dating my DR girlfriend for over a year. I would like like to know what my options for to come to the US. It seems a tourist visa is very hard to get based on what I read here and other research I have done. I do want here to come to the US to live with me for a period of time before we decide to get married.

With the K1 I have 90 days to marry but was wondering if we do not marry in this time period would this hurt my chances when applying for a CR1 after getting married in the DR?

Can you apply for a K1 again in the future? I do not believe this to be the case but can you get the K1 visa extended anyway besides getting married.

Thanks!

If you are not sure you want to marry her then don't. You cannot do what you are wanting to do. It's not "try before you buy". The CR-1 is the best option unless you have some damn good reason for wanting the K1.

Hi Tim,

I am looking to spend more time with her instead of the usually 7-14 days at a time. I can not spend anytime longer than that in the DR due to work. She also wants to come here to she if she will like to live here.

Another thing I left out is she has a son so which visa make it easier to bring her son here?

Regards,
DD

Regardless of which visa you go for, you would be making a huge time/financial commitment.  I suggest you think long and hard about what you want before going any further.

I understand the commitment needed here. That is why I have trying to find the best way to spend the most quality with my girlfriend before we decide to get married. It seems like this is really not possible and we need to continue me going down to the DR. So far I have been down every month this year but can not continue after my trip in March. I will then be back in May for a long weekend and then probably in Sept for a long weekend as well. Foreign long distance relationships are rough.

Yes LDR's are very hard especially when it involves petitioning someone. I was lucky enough to have met my SO here while he was on a work visa. So we spent alot of time together prior to it becoming long distance. How did you meet?  Do you feel like she is the one?  What does she say about marriage? Best of luck to you on what ever you choose to do!

Yes, they are rough ... If only if was possible to do what you want to do, I think we all would prefer it. Unfortunately, your time together is when you visit. Take your time, continue to visit as often as you can and when you both feel TOTALLY committed to the relationship enough for marriage then you are ready to petition. Keep in mind also, you hold a financial responsibility (10 years or until she becomes a citizen) regardless of the visa and regardless if the relationship works out. So therefore, take your time, as long as needed to know if this is what you both want. Don't rush or let her rush you into this, these visas are not meant for convenience.

Diamondback,
I meet her in a restaurant in Puerto Plata where she worked in. She no longer works there and is looking for a job in Santiago. We went to dinner and disco's a couple of times when I was on different vacations then started speaking on the phone regularly. She eventually came to be my novia. I met her son in Dec and I just met more of her family a couple of weeks ago. I plan on meeting more of her family in March. I want to make sure they like me and I like them. I do love her but I do want to spend more time with her in a environment like we will be living(in NY and working)  and not a environment like when I am on vacation(not working going to the beach everyday). Yes we have talked about marriage.

DirtyDeeds,

I understand what you are trying to do and why you are trying to do it but it is something I don't think is possible.  When you fall in love with someone from the DR because of their inability to get tourist visas you just don't get the opportunity to have a somewhat normal courtship.  In addition they don't get the chance to visit and live here to see if it is something they would want to do permanently.  Both parties have to do a bit of stepping out on faith.

The only thing you will get the chance to know is that over time you love each other enough to make the leap of faith without the safety net of complete security and knowledge.  If you try to do a fiance visa with a try before you buy mentality you do run the risk of it not working as you want and hurting both your future chances for visas.  This is just my opinion.
