I just called Spirit and JetBlue, which are the two airlines with the cheapest fares for April 12th, a day before my cita and they both do not allow one way travel due to a policy of the Dominican Republic being that I am not Dominican but a born US citizen... I know Tim has traveled one way to the DR but on Continental (too expensive)...has anyone else (US Citizen) been able to travel one way to DR on any other airline?Huh? If not, then any ideas are welcome because I really don't know what to do...The ideal thing would be to be able to buy an economical one way ticket... I really don't get that policy....

purchase your one-way ticket with JB or Spirit, then on the day you're gonna fly, reserve (but not purchase) a return trip to US on AA.

They may ask for proof at the airport so just print out the reservation.

This is how I've traveled in the past.

I have travel one way numerous times through AA and never had any problems... They never asked any questions.

They told me the same thing you was told, but I knew it was BS.

This is a sales trap for low budget companies like Spirit to basically make you buy a ticket you likely won't use and claim that it is foreign policy so that everyone will just assume it's true and no one will check up on it. Officially, D.R. migracion officers CAN deny you entry without proof of a return flight, but that is NOT the airline's problem, it's YOUR problem to deal with. The worse thing to happen to you would be that they would make you purchase a return flight before they let you leave the airport here in DR..........but that'll never happen because you are a tourist, they want you to spend your money in here.

The best thing you can do is buy your ONE WAY ticket ONLINE through the airline you are gonna use. No airline can force you to buy a round trip. But just make it easier on yourself and make a 24 hour reservation through another airline and print it out like 3Sheik suggested. I do it every time I fly just in case and they only gave me a hard time about it once out of about 50 trips.......ofcourse I don't have to worry about it anymore since I am officially a DR resident now.

Never a problem 1 way with Continental or AA here either.  FYI I was shopping for flights the other day and if your dates are flexible Continental's prices on certain days are not bad, other days are outragous.  If you go +/- 2 days you can generally get a good fare on one of the days.

I've never been questioned at Immigration about a return flight, but I'm sure Salomé Ureña and Pedro Henríquez Ureña could help me out ;)If not I'll buy a return ticket at the airport.

We have had this topic come up alot

The airlines use the DR Immigration law to make you purchase RT tickets

But you don't have to .. as other have suggested just make and hold a reservation on another airline .. they can't check another airlines reservation

There was only ONE time I got asked about the return and I gave them the reservation # from my hold ticket (not print out) and all was good

My kids almost always travel with a one way also and I do the same .. just have the reservation # but they don't ask for it
