All persons over the age of 18 years of age applying for U.S. immigrant visas are required to present a certificate showing that they do not have a criminal record.  In some cases, a consular officer can require this document of an applicant for a non-immigrant visa.  Please note that in March 2007, following a Presidential decree; the Dominican Republic changed its procedures regarding the issuance of police certificates.

Certificates are now no longer issued by the Dominican National Police, but rather by the Prosecutor’s Office (Ministerio Público.)  Another significant change is that certificates are no longer available for persons under the age of 18.  As of April 2007, the Ministerio Público is still in the process of developing the application process.

The certificate, called a “Certificate of No Judicial Records” (Certificado de No Antecedentes Judiciales), is obtainable by both Dominicans and non-Dominicans 18 years or older who permanently reside in or have resided in the Dominican Republic. Interested parties must apply in person at any office of the Prosecutor General (Procuraduría Fiscal) throughout the country.  They must present a Dominican national identification card (cédula), 2 passport-sized photographs, and the fee in cash (330 Dominican pesos as of April 2007).  A photocopy of both sides of the Dominican national identification card is also required. The certificate is usually ready the same day.

If you previously obtained a police certificate under the old system, i.e. prior to March 2007, the Immigrant Visa Unit of the U.S. Consular Section in Santo Domingo will continue to honor those documents, as long as they will not be over year old upon your entry to the United States.  Minors under the age of 18 years are not required to submit a Dominican certificate, but applicants who resided in other countries will need to submit a police certificate if it is obtainable from that country.

For more information about required documents for your immigrant visa interview, please access our webpage at www.usemb.gov.do.

My SO went to get his Police Certificate yesterday in Santo Domingo.  According to what he was told, they no longer give out Police Certificates at the Procuraduria nor in la Fiscalia o Palacio de Justicia.

He was told by the staff to go to INPOSDOM and he got it there.  Apparently they are passing the service on to the postal offices...similar I guess to what they have been doing with passports here in the US.

Anybody else aware of this...or told this recently?

Yup, my wife just got her "buena conducta"  last week and was also sent to IMPOSDOM to get it.  I thought she was mistaken until I read your post!   Smiley   Wink

Is there a way to STICKY this?

I think there should be an easy way for people to be able to flag this new information.

For a very short time, yes you could only get them in the capital after they changed the format until everyone had the new computers. Now, of course we are back to "normal". Next week it will be something different.

Passports aren't usually done at the post office either as someone else said here. You get them at the civil office.

What we have in our Dl section was prior to the new computer change, if you will scan and post his, we will have the newer version.
But as Tim says, until they change it again....
