Free English Classes in the Bronx/NY area?
« on: September 23, 2009, 09:28:15 am »
I know I posted about the free english classes at Columbia, but it's not really that close because that is on the West Side. I think I read somewhere about free english classes at Lehman College. I searched it, but nothing came up. Does anyone know of any other places/colleges etc...that offer free english classes in the Bronx, or East Side of Manhattan? I hoping Bangin knows something. Thanks!

Suggestions in Queens/Brooklyn or Lower Manhattan would be helpful as well.

I heard some of those FREE ESL classes are not going to be the same quality as if you sent them to a shcool that you paid for. If you trying to get your SO to learn FAST I would recommend an INTENSIVE program.....something like 5-6 hours Mon - Fri or 20 hrs a week. They are not going to be able to do much when they get here anyway so go to ESL Classes. It may cost you a little bit but in the end I think they may learn faster and have better quality education than some of the FREE ESL classes.

Thanks Tim and Bangin. I did a search Tim, and "free english classes" only showed my old post on Columbia.

Domer, Frank, my SO speaks English fine already. But since he can't work, it's something to kill time, and to just improve his skills already. The only place I would pay for him to go to classes are dictation classes to perfect his pronunciation and accent.

I think my SO will be taking the bust to the west side! LOL

OH...well then you OK. Do they offer free accent reduction and pronunciation classes? I thought those free classes were just the basic to intermediate level courses?

I don't think they offer those type of classes for free. But I know that my SO will be a 100% less shy to speak knowing that his accent is not as heavy. Anyway, if I could go back to school it would be for speech pathology, so I love helping him with that.

A heavy English accent when speaking Spanish really hurts my ears! I can barely pay attention to the content b/c I'm so stuck on the accent. Same thing in English when those foreign telemarketers call your house or customer service. So, if I am able to speak Spanish with out an accent, I would like my SO to do the same for English. Plus it will help him acclimate better and not feel so shy.
